Why IISc Mathematics & Computing?
Most Mathematics & Computing programmes across institutions are offered primarily by Mathematics departments, resulting in a curriculum that is heavily math-oriented. In contrast, the Mathematics & Computing programme at IISc is genuinely interdisciplinary, blending mathematics and computer science with exceptional flexibility. This structure ensures that students receive a strong foundation in mathematics and computer science while also having the freedom to explore and specialize in any area of computer science, or even pursue research at the intersection of both fields. The result is a well-rounded, customizable academic experience that prepares students for cutting-edge work across theory, systems, AI, data science, and beyond.
At IISc, all core courses are completed by the end of the second year. From the third year onward, students can choose from a wide range of soft-core electives aligned with their academic interests and career goals. The choice of electives is further supported by several study-track options, helping students build depth in areas such as AI, Data Science, Theoretical Computer Science, Computational Mathematics, and more.
In addition, students can pursue Independent Study Projects, carried out either within IISc's research labs or in collaboration with industry partners. These opportunities allow students to explore advanced topics, gain hands-on research or industry experience, and tailor their academic pathway to their aspirations. This combination of early core completion, guided academic flexibility, and real-world project opportunities makes IISc's M&C programme uniquely adaptable and student-centric.
